Rangjung Osel Choling Monastery is a prominent Buddhist monastery located in the small town of Rangjung, in eastern Bhutan’s Trashigang District. It was established in the 1990s by His Eminence Garab Rinpoche, a highly respected spiritual teacher in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery was built to serve as a center for spiritual practice, education, and community life for both monks and laypeople in the region.
The name “Rangjung” means “self-arisen,” and the monastery is believed to be located in a spiritually significant place. The setting is peaceful and surrounded by rolling hills, forests, and the Rangjung River, making it an ideal location for meditation and religious practice. The architecture reflects traditional Bhutanese style, with ornate carvings, colorful murals, and a large prayer hall that serves as the spiritual heart of the complex.
Rangjung Osel Choling is not just a place of worship but also a learning center. It houses a monastic school where young monks study Buddhist philosophy, rituals, and scriptures. The monastery also conducts regular teachings, ceremonies, and retreats, attracting followers from across Bhutan and abroad.
Over the years, it has become an important spiritual hub in eastern Bhutan. Pilgrims visit for blessings, teachings, and to take part in annual religious events. The monastery also plays a role in preserving and spreading the Nyingma teachings and traditions.
Its presence has helped to strengthen the spiritual life of the local community, offering guidance, education, and a place for reflection. For visitors, the monastery offers a chance to witness living Buddhist traditions and experience the peaceful rhythm of monastic life in a remote and beautiful part of Bhutan.
