Overview

Mountain Biking in Bhutan is an incredible adventure that allows you to explore the kingdom’s diverse landscapes, from the lush valleys of the west to the serene mountains of central Bhutan. Starting in Paro, the route takes you through the scenic Haa Valley, bustling Thimphu, and the historical Punakha. As you continue towards Phobjikha, Trongsa, and finally Bumthang, you'll experience Bhutan's rich culture, visit ancient monasteries, and bike through dense forests, high mountain passes, and picturesque villages. This journey offers a perfect combination of challenge, adventure, and cultural immersion.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Arrival in Paro

  • Ta Dzong: Explore the ancient watchtower, now a museum.
  • Kichu Lhakhang: Visit this sacred and historical temple.
  • Zuri Hike: Take a moderate 2-3 hour hike through pine forests, offering panoramic views of Paro Valley.
  • Overnight in Paro. (2250m)

Day 2: Acclimatization Hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery

  • Hike to Tiger's Nest (Taktsang Monastery): A 5-hour round trip to this iconic Bhutanese monastery perched on a cliff 900m above the Paro Valley.
  • Overnight Paro.

Day 3: Paro to Shana (84km / 900m elevation gain)

  • Drukgyel Dzong: Visit this historic fort from where you can see stunning views of Mount Jomolhari.
  • Shana Village: Reach the village and rest after your long ride.
  • Overnight Shana.

Day 4: Paro to Haa via Chele La Pass (86km / 1823m elevation gain)

  • Chele La Pass: Cycle over Bhutan's highest motorable pass, offering panoramic views of the Himalayan range.
  • Explore Haa Town: Visit the pristine Haa Valley, previously closed to outsiders.
  • Overnight Haa

Day 5: Haa to Thimphu (126km / 1157m elevation gain)

  • Thimphu Main Street: Explore Bhutan's capital, known for its modern development while retaining traditional charm.
  • Thimphu Dzong: Visit the imposing fortress, which also houses the government’s administrative offices.
  • Overnight Thimphu.

Day 6: Thimphu to Punakha (70km / 900m elevation gain)

  • Dochula Pass: Ride to this scenic pass, famous for its 108 stupas and breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks.
  • Punakha Dzong: Visit this majestic fortress at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
  • Suspension Bridge: Ride across the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan, located near Punakha.
  • Overnight Punakha.

Day 7: Punakha to Phobjikha (110km / 2100m elevation gain)

  • Nobding (Lunch Point): Cycle until you reach this point, after which you will be driven to Gangtey.
  • Gangtey Gonpa: Visit the largest Nyingma monastery in Bhutan, perched on a hilltop with panoramic views.
  • Explore Phobjikha Valley: Cycle around this beautiful glacial valley, a sanctuary for the endangered Black-necked Cranes.
  • Overnight Phobjikha.

Day 8: Phobjikha to Bumthang (140km / 1500m elevation gain)

  • Trongsa Waterfall Café: Stop for a scenic lunch with views of the waterfall.
  • Drive to Bumthang: After lunch, take a drive through the beautiful landscape to Bumthang.
  • Overnight Bumthang.

Day 9: Tang Valley Return (64km / 1000m elevation gain)

  • Burning Lake: Visit this sacred site where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated.
  • Ogyencholing Museum: Learn about the history and culture of the Bumthang Valley at this museum.
  • Tang Village Walk: Take a leisurely walk around the quaint village, known for its traditional architecture.
  • Picnic Lunch: Enjoy a local meal in the scenic surroundings.
  • Nunery Visit: Visit one of Bhutan’s largest nunneries and observe the serene environment.
  • Red Panda Brewery: Stop by to taste Bhutanese craft beer.
  • Overnight Bumthang.

Day 10: Bumthang to Paro (9-hour drive)

  • Trongsa Museum: Visit this fascinating museum housed in a historic watchtower.
  • Lempelri: Visit this scenic area before heading back to Paro.
  • Overnight Paro.

Day 11: Departure from Paro

Good to know

We currently offer two payment methods for tourists to transfer payments for Bhutan tours: Wire Transfer and Wise. However, both methods incur a wire transfer fee of $40 to $50, as Wise payments also require a final transfer to Bhutan via wire.

  • Within 30 days: 35% of the total cost
  • Within 21 days: 50% of the total cost
  • No-show in Bhutan: 100% of the total cost
