Sakten Village

Sakten Village is a remote and picturesque settlement in eastern Bhutan, located in the Trashigang District within the Sakten Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s home to the Brokpa people, a unique semi-nomadic community known for their distinct culture, traditional dress, and yak-herding lifestyle. Nestled high in the mountains, the village is surrounded by pristine forests and alpine meadows, giving it an untouched, almost mythical charm.

Life in Sakten is closely tied to nature. The villagers depend on yaks, sheep, and horses for transportation, wool, and dairy products. Their homes are typically built from stone and wood, suited for the cold climate. What sets Sakten apart culturally is the preservation of ancient customs, including unique festivals, oral traditions, and religious practices that differ from much of mainstream Bhutanese culture.

Because of its isolation, Sakten was closed to outsiders for many years and only opened to tourists relatively recently. This has helped protect its traditions and fragile ecosystem. The area is also significant for biodiversity—it is said to be one of the few places where the mythical Yeti (locally called Migoi) is believed to roam.

Visiting Sakten offers a rare glimpse into a traditional Himalayan lifestyle that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
