Rigsum Goemba

Rigsum Goemba is a peaceful and sacred monastery located on a hilltop above Trashiyangtse in eastern Bhutan. Surrounded by forests and offering beautiful views of the valley below, the monastery is a popular pilgrimage site for locals and a spiritually significant destination for visitors.

The name “Rigsum” refers to the three protective Buddhist deities—Manjushri (symbolizing wisdom), Avalokiteshvara (compassion), and Vajrapani (power). The temple is believed to house representations of all three, and devotees often visit the site to seek blessings for strength, clarity, and spiritual protection.

The walk up to Rigsum Goemba takes about 1 to 2 hours, making it a rewarding short hike for those who enjoy nature and quiet reflection. Along the way, visitors pass through prayer flags and forest trails, adding to the peaceful experience.

Though not large, the monastery holds deep religious importance for the local community and is often included in spiritual journeys across eastern Bhutan. Its serene setting, combined with its spiritual atmosphere, makes Rigsum Goemba a meaningful stop for anyone seeking insight into Bhutan’s rich Buddhist heritage.
