Dzongdrakha Monastery, often called the “Mini Taktsang,” is a beautiful and peaceful temple perched on a cliffside in Bhutan’s Paro Valley. Just a short drive from Paro town, it offers a more serene and less crowded alternative to the famous Tiger’s Nest. The monastery was founded in the 16th century by Thangtong Gyalpo, a legendary Tibetan saint known for building iron chain bridges across the Himalayas.
The complex includes four sacred temples dedicated to deities like Tara, Guru Rinpoche, Maitreya (the future Buddha), and Tsheringma, the goddess of longevity. The site is adorned with intricate murals, ancient relics, and statues that showcase Bhutan’s rich spiritual traditions. To reach Dzongdrakha, visitors walk a gentle trail through pine forests and terraced farmland, with stunning views of the Paro Valley along the way.
The monastery also hosts a local Tshechu (religious festival) around the same time as Paro’s main Tshechu, giving visitors a chance to witness traditional mask dances and rituals in a more intimate setting. Its peaceful setting and deep spiritual aura make it a perfect place for reflection and cultural exploration.
