Bumthang Brewery, nestled in the serene Chamkhar Valley of Bumthang, is Bhutan’s first and only microbrewery. It was established by Fritz Maurer, a Swiss national who settled in Bhutan in the 1960s. The brewery is known for producing Red Panda Beer, a traditional, unfiltered wheat beer made in small batches using fresh spring water from the nearby mountains, barley, wheat, hops, and yeast.
The brewing process is simple and artisanal, with each bottle hand-filled and capped. There are no preservatives or additives used, which gives the beer a natural and refreshing taste. The brewery produces a limited quantity each month, focusing on quality over quantity.
Visitors to the brewery can take guided tours, which include insights into the brewing process and a visit to the nearby Swiss-style cheese factory. The tour often ends with a complimentary bottle of Red Panda Beer and a chance to relax in the cozy tasting room overlooking the valley.
In addition to beer, the site also produces locally made cheese, apple cider, brandy, and honey. The brewery blends Bhutanese tradition with Swiss craftsmanship, offering a unique experience that combines natural ingredients, cultural exchange, and scenic beauty. It has become a must-visit destination for travelers interested in local food, drink, and sustainable craft production.
