Mebar Tsho

Mebar Tsho, meaning “Burning Lake,” is a sacred site located in the Tang Valley of Bumthang, Bhutan. It holds deep spiritual significance in Bhutanese Buddhism and is closely associated with the revered 15th-century treasure revealer, Terton Pema Lingpa. According to legend, Pema Lingpa jumped into the lake holding a burning butter lamp and emerged with sacred treasures and the lamp still alight, proving the authenticity of his visions and his status as a terton.

The lake is not a traditional lake but rather a wide pool formed along the Tang Chhu (river), surrounded by steep cliffs and pine forests. Mebar Tsho is considered a sacred pilgrimage site, attracting both locals and visitors who come to pay their respects and offer butter lamps.

Colorful prayer flags are strung around the lake, and a small altar nearby allows devotees to make offerings. Swimming or fishing in the lake is strictly prohibited due to its spiritual importance. The serene and mystical atmosphere of the lake invites quiet reflection and devotion.

Mebar Tsho plays a vital role in preserving Bhutanese spiritual heritage and is often included in pilgrimages and cultural tours. It stands as a symbol of Bhutan’s living religious traditions and the enduring legacy of Pema Lingpa, who is regarded as one of the country’s greatest spiritual figures.
