Korphu Village

Korphu Village, located in the Trongsa District of central Bhutan, is a picturesque and culturally rich settlement set within the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park. Perched on a hillside, the village offers stunning views and a peaceful rural atmosphere. It holds historical importance, having been founded in the 15th century by Terton Pema Lingpa, a revered Buddhist saint and treasure revealer. The name “Korphu” means “stone cave,” referring to a sacred cave located below the village.

The people of Korphu are known for their hospitality and vibrant cultural traditions. Visitors are often welcomed with ceremonial processions like Chipdrel and Marchang, typically reserved for royalty, making for a unique and memorable experience. Singing, dancing, and traditional dress are integral parts of village life and community gatherings.

Korphu is a key stop along the Nabji-Korphu trail, a community-based ecotourism initiative that allows travelers to explore remote villages while supporting local livelihoods. The trail also offers rich biodiversity, including sightings of rare species like the Golden Langur. Visitors can stay in certified village homestays, where they experience daily Bhutanese life, traditional cuisine, and warm local hospitality. The village exemplifies Bhutan’s balance between cultural preservation and sustainable tourism.
