Punakha Dzong

Punakha Dzong, located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers in central Bhutan, is one of the most iconic and architecturally stunning dzongs in the country. Built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it serves as both a spiritual center and administrative hub for the Punakha district. The dzong is renowned for its grand design, featuring intricate woodwork, white walls, and golden rooftops.

The dzong houses sacred relics, including the Phurpai Zhiwa, a revered statue of the Buddha. It also holds significant historical importance as the site of Bhutan’s first national assembly and the coronation of the country’s first king in 1907.

Punakha Dzong is a prime example of traditional Bhutanese architecture, with its stunning courtyards, temples, and murals. The dzong is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its spiritual ambiance and breathtaking river views. During the winter months, it remains the winter residence of the central monastic body.

A visit to Punakha Dzong offers a unique glimpse into Bhutan’s history, culture, and architectural brilliance, making it a must-see attraction for those exploring Bhutan.
