National Memorial Chorten

The National Memorial Chorten in Thimphu is one of Bhutan’s most iconic religious landmarks. Built in 1974 in memory of the third King, His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, this beautiful white stupa is a symbol of peace, compassion, and the enduring spiritual heart of the Bhutanese people.

Located in the heart of the capital, the Memorial Chorten is a place of daily worship for locals, who walk clockwise around it while spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras. Unlike other chortens, it does not house human remains but contains many revered Buddhist relics and statues.

Its golden spire, intricate carvings, and serene atmosphere attract both pilgrims and tourists seeking spiritual insight and cultural connection. Surrounded by well-kept gardens and fluttering prayer flags, it offers a peaceful retreat amidst the bustle of Thimphu.

A visit to the National Memorial Chorten is a must for anyone exploring Bhutan’s rich heritage and deep spiritual traditions
